Into the ARCTIC CIRCLE

MUSH THE ARCTIC - NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

We’ve all sipped cocktails at a poolside bar, walked along sandy beaches and laid a towel on a sun lounger. In fact, we dare say you've been doing the same thing for years. You've gazed upwards in old cathedrals and wandered around foreign museums, you've bought ice creams and paella and more often than not found yourself bored... with another three days to go.

Now is your chance to do something very different.

In early March 2021 (dates to be announced shortly), X PLATOON invite you to embark upon an epic and extraordinary eight day adventure deep into the Arctic Circle. Facing the winter conditions of northern Sweden, this experience will provide you with the opportunity to push yourself and return home with an immense sense of self-satisfaction and pride.

Led by former members of the British and Swedish Elite Forces, you will be trained how to mush a dogsled team through thick snow and tundra, then negotiate a snow mobile through some of the world's most remote and breathtaking scenery. We’ll show you how to cross country ski (totally different from your schnapps soaked slopes of Chamonix); you’ll learn ice breaking drills, how to walk in snowshoes, build a Qunisee survival shelter, how to create and maintain fire, ice fish, salt and then smoke reindeer and moose meat (vegetarian options are also available).

Travelling along the 68° N line of latitude X PLATOON's Arctic adventure will take you 186 miles (300 kilometres)  deep into the arctic. If you follow that line of latitude around your globe you will see that it runs through the most uninhabited wilderness in the world.

The remoteness of this region is otherworldly; you get a strange, yet uplifting feeling of being when you’re at the northernmost extremity of the globe, having reached somewhere very few people will ever go. For the scale, the emptiness, the invigorating cold, the staggering natural beauty; there is no place on earth quite like this.

Our unique base camp has been designed and built to allow for a little luxury to relax at the end of each day, you’ll enjoy a traditional woodland sauna and good food in the company of your fellow adventurers. It is also likely that you will be rewarded with nature’s most spectacular light show – the Aurora Borealis.
We are limiting places available to a maximum of twelve people to ensure that you get the best experience possible.  All meals and accommodation will be provided on this trip along with specialist equipment such as skis, snowshoes, snowmobiles and dog sleds. An extensive kit list and full joining instructions will be sent to you, in time for you to make your travel arrangements and preparations for the trip. The destination airport is Kiruna Airport, the northernmost airport in Sweden. Connections are suggested through Stockholm.

All travel within Sweden to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the adventure is also included.

A thorough introduction to a unique climatic zone. Steve and his team were very professional and keen to make our experience a success. This extended from the provision of all our essential
clothing at the beginning of the week to the detailed  and patient instruction in the use of snow shoes, x country skiing, snow shelter building, fire-making, foraging and food preparation and the use of snow mobiles.

My personal favourite was being able to guide our huskies and sled over a frozen lake - magical.

This trip was for myself and my son to celebrate his 30th birthday.
The memories we were able to share together will stay with us forever.

I'm absolutely buzzing from having just returned from joining X Platoon on their Arctic Adventure in the North East of Sweden and without a doubt, it was one of the most special and memorable experiences of my life. To start with, where the camp is located exudes serenity, a breathtakingly beautiful and peaceful refreshment from the hustle and bustle of normal life.

Expert too though, was the way X Platoon and Cold Skills had organized the adventure, giving us a real flavour of surviving military style, in extremely cold conditions, while managing to balance the challenge of various activities, with comfort, relaxation and outrageously delicious food!

All in all, it was truly a taste of paradise and I would like to say a huge thank you to the superb team at X Platoon and  Cold Skills, along with my fantastic, fellow attendees for giving me some very precious memories to share.

I cannot recommend Steve Heaney and his Swedish associates Conny and Adam highly enough – if you want to spend a week learning about how to live in the Arctic Circle, this is the trip for you! We learned not only the vital importance of staying warm, dry, well hydrated and fed but actually how to do so without all of the ‘mod cons’ we take for granted in our normal day to day lives.

The skills we learned included how to start a fire without matches, how to find food in the hostile environment that is the Arctic by, for example, ice-fishing, catching grouse, purifying lichen (that was surprisingly good to eat) and how to smoke meat over a fire.We also learned how to get around in the Arctic where the snow under foot is several feet thick; we had some really enjoyable times snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, snow mobiling and dog sledding.

One of the most important lessons we learned though was the importance of leadership and team-work in supporting each other to overcome all the challenges that living in the Arctic (or any other hostile environment) presents. I have to say that Steve, Conny and Adam are superb leaders and the group, it was my privilege to be part of, was first class.

This was a brilliant trip that I will savour for the rest of my days.

The adventure was most enjoyable and created some great memories. The organizers - Steve, Conny and Adam are very knowledgable and provided a warm and confident atmosphere. Overall the event was exactly what was promised in the brochure and the joining instructions, with some very interesting additional insights in the world of Special Forces. Highly recommend.

ARCTIC WILDLIFE
Picture

Moose

Moose is the largest species of the deer family, and unlike most other deer species they don't form herds but remain solitary animals.

Picture

Grey Wolf

The wolf mainly feeds on moose: one wolf family kills about 120 moose each year and its howl can be heard over ten kilometres away.

Wolverine

The wolverine is primarily a scavenger. When stressed or followed, the wolverine secretes a skunk like odour.
